MESAIDI
Mesaidi is 10 years old and she was referred to Facing the World UK by the Kwale District Eye Clinic. Mesaidi has had many challenges so far in her life. She was born with a severe facial disfigurement known us encephelocele.
This is a condition where the bones of the nose do not grow during pregnancy.
The cause for this is very similar to cleft lips and palates which are much more common. With this condition however "extra" brain grows to fill the space where the nose should be.
She faces a lot of rejection because of her appearance and does not leave home without covering her face with a cloth to avoid the stares and unkind words. Even her father's family refuses to acknowledge her after his death.
SACOMA was approached by Facing the World a UK charity that offers surgery in the UK to those children with severe facial disfigurements who cannot access surgery in their own countries.
To find volunteers for social activities, informal translations and to host families (possibly one family for one weekend a month) .They will be in the UK for 6 months and the more families we can get, the better the rehabilitation process for Mesaidi. She will be arriving in the UK on the 26th of February 2007.
Facing the World have done extensive work in this field and they try and get communities to be a part of the healing process for the patient. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Facing the World (Find more about the charity)
was founded in part as a result of the experiences of two craniofacial surgeons. Norman Waterhouse and Martin Kelly had volunteered their services with a variety of medical outreach charities and were moved each time by the children they were not able to help because of limited infrastructure, equipment and time. Moreover many of these children needed multidisciplinary teams that were impossible to bring together for an international outreach clinic..
